I was so excited to see all that you have posted on this website. Steilacoom remains much as I remember it as a child. I grew up there and lived in the church before it became a museum. We also had a home on Sequalish, second one up on the left. It's probably overgrown by now we must have planted 30 trees. So happy to see the Bair Drug Store, the Church, ER Rogers all are still there and unchanged, it seems not much has either. I have many fond memories and through this site I can now share them with my daughter. Perhaps we'll make it back there someday - Thank you ~ Live well :)

I am looking for school pictures from Mrs Archer's kindergarten class (1962-63), Mr Mitchell's 5th grade class (1967-68) and ANYTHING with Dean Addison, Tom Gibbons, Ron or Robert Tate, Danae Rideout, or Steve Lamont. Also Indian Guides memorabilia from 1965-1968. I am putting together a scrapbook for my brother Tom Gibbons as a Christmas surprise and would appreciate copies of ANYTHING. Thanks!!

Because spammers were totally out of control with our guest book, we were forced to take it down in December. Because we missed it and refused to let the spammers get the better of us, it's now funtioning again, but with a few minor modifications to keep the spammers at bay. Thanks for your patience.

Hi - I graduated from McNeil Island Elementary (6th Grade) in 1961. I was one of the unlucky ones who got trasferred from Hudtloff Junior High to Mann (against our wishes). We moved to Arizona in 1963 so didn\'t attend high there. Been back twice would like to go again but can\'t get on island so... Earned first dollar at Community Center Bowl. Many pictures and memories. Dave Wisehart

Hey everyone! I lived on McNeil Island from 85-88. My dad Ron Miller was a correction officer there. I have many fond memories of living there. It is the best place in the world. I attended the school on the Island in about 87, I was in kindergarden there. Does anyone know if they give tours of the Island? I have always wanted to go back to visit. I live in lacey now, so right there pretty much. I would love to hear from people that used to live there.

I grew up in Steilacoom and attended Cherrydale Elementary School, Salter's Point Elementary School (the year it opened), and Pioneer Middle School. I think I even volunteered one year for the Historical Society during a Christmas Party. Rhinestone Rosie was the entertainment that night. I have many fond memories of Grondels Drug Store. My friends and I would ride our bikes with pop bottles. The Store would allow us to recycle those bottles and we would greedily purchase our candy and bubblegum with great satisfaction and pride. More than 35 years later, it is so nice to see pictures on the internet of my hometown. Thanks for developing this website, it is top-notch!

It is indeed a pleasure to see my home town have this websight. After many years of not visiting "home", I will find myself at "home' 3 times in the next 4 months. the last visit in Sept for the Lake's HS 40 year reunion. I remember the Lester's and some of the Attwoods but it has been a long time. I lived in the house across from the City Hall (if it hasn't been moved from Lafayette street!). My Dad and his brother had a gas station and mechanic shop at the edge of Western State Hospital off of Far West Dr and Steilacoom Blvd. It was a great place to grow up.

I am the Granddaughter of Thomas and Mabel Lester. My Grandfather came to Steilacoom in 1908 when he was just 17 years old from McNeil Island. In 1914 he bought a home in Steilacoom where my grandparents began raising a family of six boys and three girls. My mother, Dorothy Lester was the first born to Thomas and Mabel Lester. My great grandfather was James William Lester who settled in Washington prior November 11, 1889. For more information about my grandparents see the website: http://www.geocities.com/lester_pioneer and http://www.geocities.com/my_mother1912/certificate.html

I had never heard of Steilacoom before today when I came across a mention of it on a stone in the East Hodgdon, Aroostook, Maine Cemetery. I looked up your site and am very impressed! What a beautiful area!! Words from the stone follow. Anyone from the historical society interested?

Hi! I am the neice of Bertha and Glenn Orr, who was the owners of Orrmont. In fact I have the crystal ink well that was in the desk that was built for the fort, that later was placed in the Orrmont. Aunt Berber, came down the stairs on her way out for the last time and put her two fingers in the ink well and brought it back to Virginia with her. She later gave it to me along with some other things. I was excited to see it listed on the internet. Aunt Berber would have been so excited to see Uncle Glenn's memory and past live on.

Nothing against the quality of the pictures featured on the "postcards" page per se, but couldn't we find any more compelling images of Steilacoom with which to sell ourselves? I mean -- the Public Safety Building? What the hell?

Editor:  Do I hear a volunteer for taking more compelling pictures?
Or for assisting with the web site?
P.S. The Public Safety Building staff might appreciate an image of where they work.
